The Life Of A Fashion Design Student
Just like all of you, I love to shop. I love to read magazines and judge the latest fashion trends. I love to see the gorgeous gowns that celebs wear on red carpet events and I love to combine new pieces with old to make a brand new outfit. I have always been envious of people who were that talented. To actually create an outfit from scratch, because that's something that I could never do. One of my oldest and dearest friends, Rebecca Alicia, is always taking my breath away with her beautiful sketches and fun projects that she does. She is a Fashion Design Major at Marymount University and I thought it would be fun to have her share her wisdom with what she's learned majoring in Fashion Design. In case you're planning on majoring in that or are just curious as to how the life of a fashion design student works, here's the inside scoop.

Name, Age:
Rebecca Alicia, just turned 21!

What school do you go to and what is your major?
I am currently a full time student at Marymount University studying Fashion Design.

What type of classes do you take?
Fashion Illustration, Draping, Digital Design, and Pattern Making.

What's your favorite class and why?
Draping because I'm able to work directly on the form. Draping gives the opportunity to see the shapes and form from the beginning rather than waiting to draw the pattern, transfer to muslin, then see the flaw.

Why did you choose to stay in state and not go out of state for a fashion school?
Marymount had a feeling of home at the beginning. Especially because the staff was so kind and helpful.

What made you want to major in fashion?
I think I just fell into it. Both my grandmothers could sew and so could their mothers. I think it's a passion that ran in the family and now I'm choosing to make a career out of it.

What are your current favorite fashion trends?
The color of the year by Pantone Ultra Violate is a great choice especially with the fun music that is out right now. Lavender is another great trend color.

What are your least favorite fashion trends?
Personally, I was not a fan of platform sneakers. Power to the people that can pull it off, but it's just a little too much for me.

When did you first learn to sew/make clothes?
I remember learning to hand sew while in Girl Scouts back in 2nd grade, but then I picked it up daily freshman year of high school. I started making little bags for my friends to purchase and even taught myself how to read the patterns.

What's the hardest thing about your major?
I don't find anything too difficult, everything in the field comes pretty natural, but I guess staying to my style while pleasing the professor’s preferences would be the most challenging aspect.

What are your goals/plans for the future?
I hope one day to work directly under a designer. Also work in a fashion house as the seamstresses, the ladies that hand embroider beading and threads, everything they do is so beautiful. Then maybe after ten or so years, when I have gained a great amount of experience, I'd try to work in a university to teach what I know, I love helping others with what I have learned.

What events/school activities have you done that has to do with your major?
The school has a Fashion Club, we volunteer at local fashion shows, such as Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, as dressers. The school also has a Pattern Makers Club, it's a fun way to work on garments while hanging out with friends.  Lastly, there is a class about putting on a fashion show, it is all student produced and always turns out amazing.

What type of internships have you had and what did you learn from them?
I've been interning with Tom James Company. It is a men's custom suiting company with locations all around the world. I've learned more about marketing myself and reaching out to clients. I've also been able to personally style clients with shirts, ties, and shoes.

What advice can you give to other students who are about to start their degree in fashion?
I think it's best to do what feels right to yourself because at the end of the day you know your own strengths and weaknesses.

Spring Style For Less

Spring is here! The sun is peeping out more and more everyday and I love that time frame where the seasons are changing. One of my favorite spring outfits include sundresses and booties. There are so many different styles of sundresses it's hard to choose, but if you hit up your local TJ Maxx or Marshall's you can find so many different kinds and get a lot for your money!

I got this denim button up dress at a Gabriel Brothers in Pennsylvania for only $12! You can find this kind of style just about any where though including Target and TJ Maxx. You can also find some fun off the shoulder dresses in tons of different colors!

These booties are from American Eagle but again, you can find similar ones anywhere. I think booties go great with sundresses because you can be a little taller and you can walk a little better. Of course sandals look good too!

I have been obsessed with my Kylie Cosmetics products and I love wearing the Autumn colored lip kit on sunny days. Especially if I'm running around on the weekends, because these lip products never come off! I highly recommend getting some Kylie Cosmetics products of your own. Get $10 off your first order now!

Ugly Photoshoot Location Challenge
I had so much fun this past weekend celebrating Danya’s birthday. I think one of the funniest parts though was going around town Saturday and doing the ugly photoshoot location challenge. I have seen this going around on YouTube and the pictures actually came out really nice. Danya and I love to do random photoshoots so I knew this would be a perfect Saturday afternoon task.

We went to two of our favorite places our town and I have to say, the pictures actually came out pretty cool. Check them out down below and let me know which one is your favorite!

I had a blast doing this and yes we looked ridiculous pretending to be super models at Taco Bell, but I don’t care. Have you don’t this photoshoot challenge yet?

Tiffany & Co. Perfume
I'll tell you one thing, I'm a lucky gal. Omar started this tradition of getting me something from Tiffany & Co. for my birthday. T&CO is my fave store and I love that he gets me things I wouldn't normally buy myself from there. This year he got me this awesome clutch wallet and a personalized engraved perfume!

Tiffany & Co. released this perfume a few months ago and it's seriously one of my new favorite scents. Sometimes high-end perfumes can have a strong baby powder scent to it and it can be really overwhelming, but this one isn't at all. It's such a sleek look and I really love that he even put my monogram on it.

I love the newest piece to my Tiffany & Co. collection, thanks babe!
