Now, we have a pretty big apartment, so don't think our apartment is tiny and cramped and no where for the dog to run around during the day. Our apartment is spacious and has more than enough room for the dog to keep himself entertained when we're not home. Which also since I work from home a lot I'll be home with the dog most of the time. Also, we have a huge yard right behind our apartment complex. I see people walking their dog there all the time. Omar and I also love going on adventures to the beach or anything outdoors so we will always bring our dog everywhere we go. So trust me when I say this dog will be properly exercised and no he's not too big for our apartment. He's just right.
We started with getting the basics last weekend when we went shopping at Marshals, Ross, and PetsMart. We got him a dog that that fits perfectly in the corner and Omar found a stuffed monkey that he thought was perfect as the puppy's stuffed animal (I know he's super cute right?). I also realized that I am slowly becoming a dog mom and want to buy my dog all these cute toys and treats just to spoil him. I mean seriously I bought him 3 bones, a football, a frisbee, a plush soccer ball, and a pack of 4 Tiffany Blue tennis balls. All of that is sitting in a super cute basket wit his name written in chalk on it! I had a theme because we also got him his own towel for bath time and it's a Tiffany Blue hue also. We also got him the best shampoo from Paul Mitchell Pet Collection. To top it all off his food & water bowl are also Tiffany Blue hue colored. I mean, how fabulous.
We decided to order all our food from Chewy. This website is amazing and super cheap. We got enough food and treats to last a few months! So, instead of heading to the store every few weeks, we can just resubmit our order and get the food delivered right to our doorstep. Thanks Mom for showing me that website!
Next what we had to do was clean the apartment and pick up anything that isn't "chew proof." The first thing my dog will learn is to not chew. He'll learn that before he learns his own name if he has too! To help with that we got a handful of puppy chew toys and like I said before put everything away and out of reach so he can't get to it. That means in the bathroom we put the trash can, bath mat, and small things in the laundry room and shut that door. We keep our bedroom door shut and all our clothes in our closet. In the living room there isn't anything he would get to because everything is either on high table or shut. He's still too small to really get to anything that's on top of the tables so we'll deal with that if it ever comes to it. Our goal is to teach him what not to chew so by the time he's bigger and can jump on tables and counters or if we leave a door open he knows better not to get into it.
Where is the puppy going to go if you're not home? As of right now no we do not have a kennel and to be honest we don't plan on getting one. He is like really tiny so we are just putting him in the bathroom if we aren't home. There's nothing within reach that he's going to get into. The laundry room and closet doors are shut so he can't get into there. We'll leave him with some food and water and some toys to keep himself entertained. And of course pee pads on the floor and a place for him to sleep on. I really hope he's a good dog like my parent's dog and as he gets bigger we won't have to get a kennel to lock him in if we aren't home. I just don't like the idea of that. I want him to be able to walk around the entire apartment without tearing anything up or having an accident anywhere.
Anyways, that's the plan for right now. We might adjust things as time goes on, but the main thing is Omar and I really wanted to do this our way. We want to pick out his food and toys and decide how he's going to be trained. We've both have had good luck with our family dogs in the past so we hope this won't be an exception. When we went to go visit him he was a really chill dog and wasn't hyper like his siblings. We honestly just can't wait to bring him home and give him so much love!
