For those who know me personally, I am not and let me rephrase that... NOT a morning person. However, I started to realize that I was sleeping too late and staying up all night. I hated that half my day was gone and I love the sun, so why wasn't I spending more time in it? I wanted to change that, but I wasn't sure how to start. I decided to take it slow and do a few key things to make me more of a morning person. I'm not saying I wake up at 6am every day, but for a while now I haven't been sleeping past 9am (at the latest). Here is what I did to change my schedule around!
Go To Bed Earlier // I was that person who stayed up until 4am every night. It didn't matter if I worked the next morning or not. I just generally have trouble falling asleep. I do take sleeping pills to knock me out most nights. Even if I was up at 6am, I just have a hard time falling asleep. I have set a time where I go to sleep and that is usually between 10:30PM - 11:30PM. I'm not a grandma or anything I just know that if I get enough sleep I won't feel so crappy when I have to wake up for an early shift. It also helps that I live with a Marine and he wakes up hella early so I go to bed when he goes to bed.
Set Your Alarm // On my days off I usually never set an alarm... bad idea. Now on my days off I set my alarm. The key is though set it thirty minutes earlier than you did the day before. So my days off I was waking up around ten. Then I changed it to 9:30, woke up at 9:30 for a couple of days, then switched it to 9... and so on. This helps you get into a routine and your body gets used to waking up earlier and earlier every couple of days.
Drink Lemon Water // I used to hate lemons in my water. However, I've read there are so many benefits of lemon water and one of them is giving you more energy. When I'm getting ready in the morning I have my cup of lemon water by my side.
Have Something To Look Forward To // I know that some people love to work out in the morning and that is their reason for getting up and it gives them more energy. I also know that I love coffee and my morning feels complete with an iced coffee in my hands. Whatever makes you want to get out of bed in the morning, stick with that. If it's working out, iced coffee, donuts, or a favorite television show. As long as it's something exciting and makes you happy, have it ready for you in the morning. It's a good reason to get out of bed.
Don't Have Dark Curtains Up // If you're like me, then you can't sleep when lights are on. I used to love being able to put a blanket over my windows so no sunlight would come in (don't judge- ha!) but in my apartment I have the windows wide open! So when the sun comes popping up it's right there to greet me in the morning.
This is what I did to become a morning person. Slowly but surely, I became a morning person. Truth be told, if you want to become a morning person... just adopt a puppy!
xoxo, Michele
