Speakeasies Are Just As Cool Today As They Were In The 20's

Speakeasies Are Just As Cool Today As They Were In The 20's

Imagine having to be secretive while walking into a bar. You're not able to stand out or bring any attention to yourself as you slide into a back alley and knock on a hidden door. Very different from todays bar scene. The term speak easy comes from a bartenders lingo when ordering alcohol, you were literally suppose to "speak easy" and use code words for everything. Speakeasies are just as hidden in the big cities today as they were in the 20's and I'm here to share some of my favorite hidden gems with you today.

Speakeasies Are Just As Cool Today As They Were In The 20's

Washington D.C. // I'll start with one a little closer to home. I took my boyfriend to Chicken + Whiskey for his birthday, but for the life of me we couldn't find the speakeasy. It wasn't until this other guy started talking to us and telling us it's behind the kitchen door. I never would have thought to walk back there. It's a very "fast food-esque" type of place. When we walked past the kitchen, we were in the bar in the back. It was so cool and I never would have known that this was here. The Gibson is another one in D.C., but a little harder to get too. Since you're looking for an unmarked door in the middle of the US capital.

New York City // Okay, you know New York is going to have the best speakeasies. PDT (Please Don't Tell) is literally hidden behind a phone booth. Angel's Share is one of the most secretive bars, not because no one knows about it, but because it's impossible to find! Beauty & Essex is hidden in a pawn shop, Dear Irving is inspired by Woody Allen's "Midnight to Paris," head to Grand Central Terminal to find The Campbell, and The Ship is an underground bar (literally).

Chicago // Room 13 is exclusive to hotel guest, but maybe you can figure out the password (which changes every night) and finesse your way in. The Violet Hour isn't too hard to find, except when a new artist paints their mural for the month, you just have to know what you're looking for.

Philadelphia // Want to know something crazy? I didn't even know this was a speakeasy! My boyfriend and I just wanted to go to a nice place for drinks one night in Philly. The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company is the easiest one to get into, you just walk in! But you need a reservation.

Los Angeles // Another city with a ton of hidden gems. The Varnish is hidden in a local sandwich shop and you're going to want to order the French dip if you want to get in. To get into La Descarga you have to walk through a wardrobe (Serious Narnia vibes, am I right?). Lock & Key is behind a red door and neon sign, super cliche, but amazing. Black Rabbit Rose is a speakeasy + magic show all in one, it doesn't get any better than that.

Portland // I saw the word "mafia" and knew I had to add this to the list. To get into Circa 33 you have to enter the code in the "mafia" book on the shelf by the bathrooms in order to get in. I don't know exactly what that means, but I hope to find out one day.

These are just some that I've been to as well as some I have on my bucket list. If you have any others to add to my list please comment down below!
