Having A Photo Shoot At Home

I love taking photos. It's part of why I started my blog. I'm constantly learning to new things and watching Lightroom tutorials on how to make photos that much better. I love making a photoshoot out of nothing. Whether it's a colorful wall or a busy street, you can always make something work in your favor. Oddly enough, the hardest place to create a photoshoot can be your own home. Why is that? You know every corner of your home, you know the items you have to use as props, you have your whole closet at your disposable. Having a photoshoot at home should be the easiest place to do it. I was able to work with some of my friends to get some amazing photos. It doesn't matter if you're at home, all you need is a little creativity.

Setting the scene
The first step is to find a place with the best lighting. Even if it's just out front, just find where the best light is and move towards there. Then you need to decide what your background is going to be. Get rid of the trash and wires and things you don't want in the photo. LOOK AT YOUR CAMERA! What do you see? If you don't like it, move it.

Don't be afraid to move furniture
Don't get me wrong.. if you move something you've got to move it back, but who cares!? Move your couch, your t.v. stand, the tables... put what you want in the photo and move what you don't want. For this first set of photos, we rearranged our entire living room around.

Props
This is your home! You know everything that is inside of it so find what props you want to use for your photos. For the photos with my boyfriend (first set of photos) we used his glass whiskey set, the record player, our fireplace t.v. stand and the chess board to give it this "classy bachelor vibe," but he is definitely not a bachelor okay. We even used our dog to give it some different levels. What you don't see is the dog treat in my boyfriend's hand and that's what my dog was keeping his eye on the entire time. For my friend, Danya, we used her roller skates and polaroid camera to give it a 70's vibe. She's actually wearing my the-dye shirt and blue sunglasses because they matched her skates. It was something we put together is less than ten minuets and these photos came out phenomenal!

Movement
I have noticed that not everyone is the best at giving directions the it comes to being behind the camera and that's okay. I work with photographers so I have experience with what to look for it comes to posing. Something to remember is that, if it feels weird, it looks great! My boyfriend doesn't normally sit crosslegged or with his knee bent, so he was uncomfortable the whole time, but look how awesome the photos came out. With Danya, I had her be extra when it came to rollerskating. I know you don't normally kick your legs up, but I told her to do it and look how good these photos came out.

Editing
Everyone has their own editing style. I prefer Lightroom and hardly use PhotoShop. I also use the Sakura presets on photos and have loved the way it looks on photos. Sakura's #1 tip is to make sure the photo is near perfection before you edit it. So make sure it looks near perfection, then you'll have less to edit later on.

Mastering the selfie
If you don't have a friend to take photos with, that's okay. All you need is a tripod or at least a makeshift tripod. Before I had my tripod and ring light and all the equipment I used to set my camera up on a stack of books. Practice your poses in the mirror, sounds odd, but trust me, if you can see your face and posture you'll perfect the perfect selfie a lot faster.

Be authentic
Even though I just went through editing a photo and putting yourself in awkward positions... the pictures that turn out the best are the ones with an authentic smile. That's why it's great to take photos with friends because they know how to get you to laugh.

You can always make something out of nothing when it comes to photography. Even if it's just a couple of iPhone photos outside of your house. I recently shared some of my favorite Instagram accounts that are inspiring me to step up my photography game (view that blog post by clicking the link here) and I hope that this post inspires you!
