Recently I was watching some old school Mary-Kate and Ashley "You're Invited Series" and one of the episodes I couldn't help but to think, "Damn, I'd wear that outfit today." Then BAM–a blog post idea came to mind. I could easily pull some outfit inspo from my favorite twins that I would still wear 20 years after they wore it.
So what I tried to do was pull up scenes from each movie and tv series to showcase the different looks they had throughout the years. There is no real order to this, I just kind of saved 20 looks I was obsessed with.
1. The trench coats + bucket hats from 2001 "Winning London"
This look is so iconic because you might not recall, but these girls were wearing designer pieces. They were way ahead of their time when it came to fashion and these long posh style trench coats and bucket hats are super trendy today. Those turtle necks too, super chic and made them look more mature because what 16 year old would actually wear turtlenecks?
There is nothing more iconic than the overalls from "It Takes Two." People are still looking for the perfect pair of overalls as adults. Especially when they were younger, they were more "matchy" because thats what you do when you have twins, but the one long pair of overalls versus the short pair was a great way to make them match without being too obvious. I also love how MK has a long sleeve shirt tied around the waist. I will be hunting down this look at a thrift store asap.
3. The leather jackets + one strap back packs from 1999 "Passport To Paris"
Okay, I'm going to cheat just a little here. Because please note how MK's character was wearing graphic band tee's before Urban Outfitters was selling them, I'm just saying. But what I really loved was the I Heart NY shirts with matching red shorts and skirts. It's interesting to see how they paired graphic t-shirts, not once but twice. And it's such a popular trend nowadays, I told you they were ahead of their time.
5. The blouses from 2001-2002 "So Little Time"
Besides the movie empire the twins had created, they also had a couple shows that briefly aired. This was the show where they were high school age so their clothes were starting to highlight their individuality and giving them a more mature vibe. The show was based in California (Malibu I believe) so they were able to have those low cut jeans (circa 2004 Laguna Beach) and tight shirts that barely cover their navel. It was just a different vibe then. One of my favorite pieces from this series were the blouses. This might confuse you and I tried to pull as many examples as I could possibly find, but the blouses these girls wore were stunning. They were loose and flowy, and when they had their own line of clothes at Wal-Mart I remember the blouses were some of the first things I got. Their blouses just compliment their tiny frames so well and the different lengths and sleeve cuts really show off their personality and style.
6. The color block dresses + white knee-high boots from 2000 "Our Lips Are Sealed"
You guysssssss. COME ON. Of course this one had to make the cut. "Our Lips Are Sealed" was such a great movie. The concept was so unique and fun and made me wish my family was in the witness protection service. Too far? If I got to wear an outfit like this then it's not too far. Everything about these outfits are to die for. I love how MK's (yes I gravitate towards MK's tomboy edge) is a two piece set. I think it creates a whole different outfit with the smallest amount of tweaking (shout out to the costume designers for this film). It also gives you an idea if you thrift a dress, you know you can make it into a two piece set. The boots though are just...wow. If someone can find me a pair of these boots today I will pay you. The block heel, the zipper and the fact that the boots fit their calves perfectly which is very hard to find in a knee-high.
7. The shoes from 1998-1999 "Two Of A Kind"
This is a series that I have to break up into multiple posts. At the time, this was the style trend. The chunky shoes, the big sweaters, the overalls... but then the 2000s hit and everything change. Over time though this look has made a comeback and a lot of these pieces are things that I would pick up while thrifting. These shoes are no exception. You can make a whole statement with just the shoes of an outfit and that's exactly what they did in "Two of a Kind." Whether it's the platform sandal or the Adidas sneakers, you can find similar styles of these shoes just about anywhere now a days.
8. The Fendi bucket hat + lined denim jacket from 2001 "Holiday In The Sun"
So here's the thing, I said I would deliver 20 looks, but I never said I wouldn't pull multiple outfits from the same film. This will not be the last time I showcase an outfit from "Holiday In The Sun," because this is the first movie in the MK&A series where they aren't matching in every scene! They really start to find their own style and most likely are old enough to have a say in what they wear. So let's start with the beginning of the film where they're on the plane about to go to the Bahamas. MK is wearing a Fendi bucket hat. Yes, your jaw can hit the floor now. I was literally looking at this exact bucket hat (just for fun of course) the other day because one of my favorite bloggers styled it and when I was putting this post together I had a different outfit in mind for this movie, but when this image came up I knew I had to include it. The Fendi bucket hat is everything and while MK is sporting a designer accessory, Ashley is killing it in the lined denim jacket. I have a Levi jacket with this same style and I love mine. It is the perfect fall/winter jacket. It's chic, modern and really never goes out of style. I would wear both of themes items on a daily basis.
9. The fringed poncho from 2002 "When In Rome"
I would say that my idealistic dreams of an internship started with this movie. I learned to not trust people who are going after the same job as you, but to also trust your talent. Your work will speak for itself. One of my favorite outfits from this movie is something that not everyone can pull off. Personally, I don't think I could pull it off because I'm too short, but Ashley does it fabulously. It's a fringed, hand knit poncho pair with slim bell bottom jeans and heeled boots. Such a 2000s look, but it's a style that has made it's way back time and time again. I wish I could have found better images from this scene, because these pictures don't do the outfit justice. It is a great look!
I love a shirt that has the right amount of shoulder showing. It's such a simple way to turn a basic shirt into something a bit more classy. You can dress them up or dress them down and for being California high school students, "So Little Time" really nailed this look.
11. The basics from 2003 "The Challenge"
This one was sort of hard to pull images for because I couldn't seem to find an exact example of what I'm referring to, but what I love from this film are the way they style "the basics." By basics I mean the white t-shirts, the sunglasses, the denim skirts and the Converse sneakers. All basics that everyone has in their closets, but they are all styled so differently. There wasn't one scene or one outfit that really showcased that, it was just an overall theme throughout the whole film. If you have some basics but don't know how to style them, I suggest watching this movie.
12. The sweaters from 1998-1999 "Two Of A Kind"
I told you I wasn't done with "Two of a Kind!" Not only were the shoes a great staple piece in the outfits, but the sweaters are items I am constantly looking for when I go thrifting. I'm pretty sure I even purchased a tan Ralph Lauren sweater that looks just like Mary-Kate's in the photo above. I live for oversized sweaters and you can typically find sweaters in the men's section believe it or not!
The best short-film in the "You're Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley's..." series is the School Dance Party (2003) episode. The songs, the drama and the fashion make this episode stand out among the rest and leave a lasting impression on our pre-teen years. This is the episode I had watched recently and inspired this post and although I'm singing "Monday morning... 🎶" in my head, I'm really thinking of Mary-Kate's cheetah print skirt paired with a red tank top and a choker necklace. When I say these girls were ahead of their times, this short-film proves that. These cheetah print skirts have made a comeback and MK&A did it before it was trendy.
14. The bandana bathing suit from 2001 "Holiday In The Sun"
The reason this look was so iconic is because what 16 year old would wear a bandana as a bathing suit on a family trip? But the Olsen Twins did that and now look at how popular bandanas and scarves as tops are. Popular designers sell these "scarf tops" for hundreds of dollars, when all you need is a classic bandana. Seriously... iconic.
You might not have noticed this when you were a child, but when I recently watched this movie I realized that their entire ski outfits are freaking CHANEL. Yup! Everything from the goggles to the jackets and of course the pants. Just wow. 10/10 great fashion choice.
16. The tights + loafers from 1998-1999 "Two Of A Kind"
Look, I'm just as shocked as you are that I have found so many styles from this one-season show, but they really killed it back in the day. Ashley's feminie style was something I never gravitated towards as a kid, but as an adult, I would–and have–definitely worn the tights and loafer looks. It's a chic classic look. You really can't go wrong with it. Also, if anyone knows where I can get tights like in the bottom photo please let me know (they kind of remind me of the Gucci ones–so cute!).
This was the hardest images to find, but I think I got a good one. In the "You're Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley's Fashion Party (1999)" the girls literally throw a party where they try on a bunch of different styles and then their friends older sisters gives them a tour of a fashion institute college (foreshadowing their future's much?). There are little bits and pieces from each outfit they wear that I just love, it was sort of hard to pick just one. So the best way I could showcase these few items were through a clip of the scene I'm referring to. In this clip you will see Mary-Kate's first outfit contains a blue fuzzy purse and these "silk-like" pants. So chic. Then in another outfit, Ashley is rocking this vintage cheetah faux fur coat with a matching hat. Très chic indeed.
A seriously underrated MK&A Olsen movie. One of my favorites, this movie is a freakin' classic and yet no one seems to know about it. Maybe it has something to do with the idea that they were sort of kidnapped on accident. Why wouldn't anyone enjoy that? Odd. These adorable 90s gals rocked the pink on pink and blue on blue look throughout the entire movie. I'm just saying, next time I go thrifting I'm going to be looking for matching sets like these.
I swear this is the last one from "Two Of A Kind," but I had to include these pajamas. I would wear both of these pj sets today for sure!
Lastly, the outfit that inspired this post. I already told you that this post was inspired by the "You're Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley's School Dance Party (2003)" episode, but what I didn't mention is that it was this outfit that inspired the post. While I was watching this scene of the girls at the dance I kept thinking, "Hmm. Ashley's dress is pretty cute. Pair it with a different pair of shoes, maybe a slit on the side. I'd wear that. I even like her funky beaded hair style." That's when this post came to mind because how many of their outfits would I wear almost 20 years later? Probably a lot. Well yeah, it was definitely over 20 outfits!
This post was so different from anything I've ever done and I hope you enjoyed this throwback as much as I did. I'm thinking 20 Lizzie McGuire outfits for my next post? What do you think? 🤔

What a trip down memory lane! I loved these movies growing up and their wardrobe was so awesome.
ReplyDeleteRight!!! I’m so glad someone loves their fashion looks as much as I do!! Thanks for reading ❤️
DeleteI'm 4 years younger than the twins, and I learned about them when I was around 11-12. that very last outfit was the very first photo of them I saw in my local newspaper. definitely left a very weird long-lasting nostalgia to me, but in a very good way! I really love their colour block outfits, I really hope someone will re-create it.
